History

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – After starting the season with three straight victories, the Wisconsin Badgers fell 2-1 at No. 7 North Dakota on Saturday to drop the championship game of the 2023 Ice Breaker Tournament.

Despite tallying 30 shots on goal, the Badgers (3-1-0) were unable to find the back of the Fighting Hawks’ net.

North Dakota (2-0-0) got on the board first with a short-handed goal by Hunter Johannes 13 minutes into the first period.

The game stayed quiet until the Fighting Hawks struck again almost halfway through period two. Riese Gaber fired a backhand shot to beat senior goaltender Kyle McClellan.

The Badgers headed into the final frame looking for their first tally, but were slowed by three penalties and were unable to convert on any scoring chances.

Notes to know:

– The game marked the first meeting between the two schools in five years, last meeting on Nov. 3, 2018 in Grand Forks
