Báez hits a key HR to sink Boston

DETROIT — Javier Báez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 on Monday.

Baez sent a 396-foot drive into left field off Ryan Brasier that Austin Meadows scored, bringing home two players who are part of a revamped team hoping to go far.

Michael Fulmer (1-0) pitched the eighth inning and Gregory Soto closed out the game for his first save of the season.

Austin Davis (0-1) took the loss following giving up one run on two hits in one inning.

Boston led by several runs in each of its first three games once morest the New York Yankees but didn’t win until Sunday, when Bobby Dalbec hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the sixth inning.

For the Red Sox, Puerto Ricans Kike Hernández 4-0; Christian Vazquez 3-1. The Dominican Rafael Devers 4-2. Panamanian Jonathan Araúz 3-0.

For the Tigers, Puerto Rican Báez 3-1 with one run scored and two RBIs. Venezuelans Miguel Cabrera 3-2 with one produced; Harold Castro 2-1.
