(CNN) — Satellite images showed the extent of the damage to the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which has been badly damaged over the past year.
Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Hanna Malyar, presented Kiev’s assessment of the situation on the ground on Wednesday, saying that Ukrainian forces hold large areas around Bakhmut that they claim to have recaptured from Russian forces.
The official indicated that “nearly 20 square kilometers” of the liberated areas in the suburbs were not lost, and that “heavy fighting” continues around the city, with Ukrainian forces advancing in some areas.
She also admitted that Russian forces were “advancing a bit” as well.
