Bald people have a higher risk of skin cancer, doctors say. Know how to avoid

Bald people or people with thinning hair have a higher risk of skin cancer. Dermatologists warn that having a more exposed scalp and more delicate skin increases the chances of developing this type of tumor.

In addition to the delicacy, the top of the head, along with the face, are the main places hit most aggressively by the sun, as they are constantly exposed, and therefore suffer more from the appearance of cancer.

“The lack of hair exposes the scalp directly to the sun’s rays. Threads are protection for the head, just as clothes form a suitable layer for our bodies to protect us and prevent the sun from affecting our skin. Hence the need to apply sunscreen to the head even on bald people”, explains dermatologist Bethânia Cavalli, from Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual, in São Paulo.

Bald people must reinforce exams

According to Bethânia, the fact that the top of the head cannot be frequently examined by the person themselves also contributes to the risk. Therefore, she may only notice spots or wounds that appear in this region late.

“Skin self-examination is effective, but there are parts of the body that our eyes cannot reach, which is why you need to visit the doctor every year if you are someone at risk. The sooner the diagnosis is made, the greater the chances of a cure”, he warns.

Protection includes the use of caps and hats, especially on the beach or in environments with excessive sun. Bald people should also use sunscreen on the top of their head as a skin care strategy.

Skin cancer

Skin cancer can appear in two forms: melanoma (which can metastasize and reach deeper layers of the skin) and non-melanoma (more superficial). Non-melanoma is the cancer with the highest incidence, but the one with the lowest mortality if treated properly.

The main causes of the disease are recurrent excessive exposure to the sun without adequate sunscreen protection, as well as a family history of relatives with cancer. People with light skin and hair are most likely to have the disease.
