As of this writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 holds the #1 bestselling spot on the Steam charts and is currently the #3 most played game. All expectations of the publisher Larian Studio have thus been exceeded. While the publisher team expected around 100,000 concurrent players, over 700,000 enthusiastic concurrent players were observed at one point.

Faced with such resounding success, the question arises whether the publisher is not going to release DLC and other additional content for the game.

The demand for Baldur’s Gate 3 is there. As characters in the game can currently only be upgraded “up to” level 12 and the Dungeons & Dragons model even allows builds up to level 20, there is also a lot of potential in terms of content.

No DLC planned at the moment

In an interview with PC Gamer, Larian founder Sven Vincke said that the development of an extension had not yet started. If there is really a DLC planned, then it would only be in a larval state.

If Larian Studios brings the same care to a DLC as to the main game with its six years of development, that could mean a DLC release in two or three years at the earliest.

DLC up to level 20 would make players too powerful

Normally, it would be normal for a DLC to increase the level cap as well. But for Baldur’s Gate 3, that would pose a lot of problems, as the role-playing game closely follows Dungeons & Dragons content and rules.

Between levels 13 and 20, characters can learn extremely powerful spells. Here are two examples:

Projection astrale : You and up to eight willing creatures within range project your astral bodies into the Astral Plane (the spell fails and the cast is lost if you are already on that plane). The material bodies left behind are unconscious and in a state of suspended animation. They do not require sustenance or air and they do not age.
Wish : According to the player’s handbook, summoning in the ninth degree is the most powerful spell a mortal creature can cast. Possible effects include fully healing up to 20 creatures in the player’s environment, summoning an item worth up to 25,000 gold or later modifying a dice roll and modification of the resulting reality of the game.

For gamers, these effects are of course absolutely desirable. For a game master or video game studio on the other hand, they are a pure balance nightmare. The development time of a DLC would be further extended.

Larain’s director, Mr. Vincke, explains that when talking about level 13-20 adventures as material for an expansion, it sounds great at first, but on closer inspection, it turns out. still quite demanding. This is why most D&D adventures are designed for players below level 12.
