Baldur’s Gate 3 surpasses 500,000 concurrent users on Steam

And it continues to increase.

I knew that Baldur’s Gate 3 was going to be important, but I didn’t think it would be. ce big: On its second day of release, Larian’s epic D&D role-playing game surpassed 500,000 concurrent players on Steam.

That’s not enough to put it at the top of the Steam leaderboard, which is steadfastly dominated by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a game that regularly has over a million concurrent players. But this allows it to get closer to the eternal second, Dota 2, and to significantly exceed other heavyweights such as PUBG, Apex Legends, Naraka: Bladepoint and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the only one of the first five games that is not a multiplayer game and the only one that is not free-to-play. What’s even more remarkable is that it’s not, by conventional definitions, a mainstream game. The D&D name carries some weight, sure, but multiplayer isometric RPGs aren’t the kind of video game people typically line up for.

The same goes for Larian: The studio has been known to RPG fans for many years, but it’s not particularly known beyond that.

Baldur’s Gate 3 nearly broke the 500,000 copies mark when it launched yesterday, but it failed to break the ceiling – perhaps in part because it’s a 122GB download and that there was no preload period available. Luckily the Steam servers held up, but for some that meant launch day was a download day and not a play day, so it was fair to assume that the game wouldn’t really start until the next day, that’s ie today, and that is what seems to have happened.

Swen Vincke, Larian’s boss, said on Twitter earlier today, before Baldur’s Gate 3 surpassed 500,000 contestants, that the massive success of the game ” brought a lot of tears. But as the number continued to climb, he also expressed a little growing nervousness about the whole thing.

Also keep in mind that this is Steam only: Baldur’s Gate 3 is also available on GOG. We don’t have access to the number of players on this site, but regardless, it adds up to the total. That’s a lot of people playing digital D&D right now.

The first patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 should be released today. We will keep you informed of its arrival and its effects.
