MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s golf team travels to Little Rock, Arkansas, this week to take part in the 15-team Everett Buick GMC Classic conducted at Chenal Country Club. Hosted by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, teams will play the par-72, 7,115 Founders Course over 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The Cardinals compete for the third straight week, following an 11th-place finish at the Badger Invitational in Wisconsin and a 10th-place finish last week at the Purdue Fall Invite. In both tournaments, the Cardinals started slow in the first round, got hot in the second round and faded in the final round.
This week’s goal in Little Rock is to improve that consistency. “Our team is too talented to repeat the last two weeks like we have with the inconsistency,” said Ball State coach Mike Fleck.
Ball State has had golfers among tournament leaders in each of four tournaments this far, including Carter Smith’s individual title at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational and his third-place finish in the season’s opening event at the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff. Kash Bellar enjoyed a fourth-place finish at the Badger Invitational after taking a brief lead during the back half of the final round.
Combined, Smith and Bellar garnered three consecutive golfer of the week awards by the Mid-American Conference. Braxton Kuntz has been a steady contributor and started hot the past two weeks. Ali Khan has fueled the Cardinals with low scores in the second round the past two weeks. Consistency in the first and final rounds is what Ball State seeks in Little Rock.
Bellar, Smith and Kuntz head this week’s Cardinal lineup that is rounded out by Alec Cesare and Khan.
Participating teams this week include Little Rock, Ball State, Boston College, Central Arkansas, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Northern Colorado, Oral Roberts, Troy, UT-Arlington and UTEP.
