After sometimes violent protests in the dispute over an increase in the minimum wage, textile factories in Bangladesh resumed operations today. According to police, many factories that were closed due to the protests have been reopened.

Hundreds of thousands of workers entered the factories, it said. Top union leader Babul Akhter called on workers to return to the factories.

However, according to the union representative, the dispute over the increase in the minimum wage has not been resolved. What is called for is an increase in the minimum wage to the equivalent of around 194 euros per month, which would be roughly tripling the current level.

Four dead in protests

A commission appointed by the government had increased the minimum wage by 56.25 percent to the equivalent of 105 euros, which the employees in the textile factories rejected. Further protests followed in which at least 70 factories were looted.

At least four people were killed in the violence sparked by protests for higher wages. Nearly 140 workers and around half a dozen union organizers were arrested, according to police. Investigations have been launched against at least 10,000 employees. Akhter called on the government to release all those arrested and end the investigation.
