As James Peak, the creator of the BBC Radio 4 series «The Banksy Story» received a tip that a work of art had appeared overnight on the side of a building near Finsbury Park in London, he set out to see the work.

What Peak saw: Behind a cut-back mature tree, a large amount of green paint that looked like leaves was painted on the wall of a house. Below, in black, is a person holding a spray gun that resembles a fire extinguisher.

Peak told the BBC that he was absolutely certain that it was a Banksy work of art: “But as always with Banksy – you never know for sure until he admits it by publishing it on his website.”

The most famous of all street artists usually officially confirms his work by posting images on his website and posted on social media; In the case of the tree at Finsbury Park this has not yet happened.

The message of the artwork is clear, says Peak. “Nature is struggling and it is up to us to help it grow again.”

Art-related web portals classify the work as an installation that invites the viewer to think about their relationship to nature and the environment. By juxtaposing the dead tree with the artificial vibrancy of the green color, Banksy may be urging a reassessment of how urban societies interact with nature. Using a fire extinguisher to apply the paint also conveys a sense of urgency, a call to action that cannot be ignored.

The shade of paint used also matches the shade used by Islington council (the north London district where the artwork appeared) for street signs, which Peak says shows Banksy’s eye for detail. The work was created yesterday, Sunday, on St. Patrick’s Day.

“It’s spring now and this tree should be bursting with leaves, but Banksy must have cycled past and thought how miserable it looked,” Peak said.

While looking at the artwork, Peak met Islington councilor Flora Williamson, who was on an election tour. She later tweeted that Banksy had come to the area overnight, which was by far the most exciting thing of the day.
