Barbara Kuchar Doughty, Artist and Devoted Wife, Passes Away at 89

Seattle, WA – Barbara Kuchar Doughty, an accomplished artist and devoted wife, passed away on May 28, 2025, following a brief illness.She was 89 years old. Doughty is survived by her husband of 63 years, james I. Doughty, and thier four children: Ann L. Breeswine, Dr. Paul E. Doughty, John R. Doughty, and James P. Doughty.

A Life well-Lived: Early Years and Adventures

born on August 29, 1935, in Dallas, Texas, to Edward and Albina Kuchar, Barbara was one of five daughters. Her sister, Nancy Betik, remains as the sole surviving “Kuchar girl.” After graduating high school in 1953, she briefly attended the University of seattle before joining her sister in Anchorage, Alaska.

A pivotal Christmas holiday in Honolulu during 1960 led barbara to take a job there, where she met Coast Guard officer Jim Doughty at a Halloween party in 1961. They married on April 27, 1962, marking the beginning of 17 years of travel as a service wife.

Settling in seattle and Embracing Art

following Jim’s retirement from the Coast Guard, the couple settled in Seattle, Washington. Barbara pursued her passion for art, becoming an accomplished artist and receiving numerous awards.

She was also a devout Roman Catholic and active in church groups. Doughty will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Memorial Service Held

A memorial mass took place on Thursday, June 19th, at 11:00 AM at St. Mark Catholic Church in Shoreline, Washington, followed by a reception. Becks Funeral Home in Edmonds handled the arrangements.
