Barbers and business owners across multiple communities are stepping up to ease financial pressures on families as a new school year approaches, offering free back-to-school haircuts, backpacks, and essential supplies.
Community Barbershop Back-to-School Initiatives
In Guildford, Surrey, Sid Gumbrell of Clean Cuts Barber Shop hosted an event from 09:00 BST to 17:00 on Sunday to support families facing rising living costs. Alongside haircuts, children received free stationery, pencil cases, and water bottles. School uniforms, shoes, haircuts, etc, it all adds up and if we can just help take one cost away it’s a massive deal for us,
Gumbrell said. The event received support from corporate donors including Tesco and Krispy Kreme.
Traditions and High Turnout Across Multiple Cities
In Tampa, Florida, New Generation Barber Shop marked its fifth year of offering free back-to-school haircuts. Owner Davis Nguyen, who grew up in Section 8 housing South of Gandy, noted that every dollar counts for families juggling multiple children, shoes, backpacks, and haircuts. More than 100 students filled the chairs during the event, which also partnered with other local businesses to distribute backpacks, school supplies, and bicycles. Single mother Alivia Rivera noted that the effort definitely takes a lot of load off of me for sure.
In Walla Walla, Washington, the second annual Back to School Bash took place at Washington Park on Thursday, August 13, according to Leyzer Cutz founder Jeremy Ley. Five barbers and four cosmetologists delivered about 60 haircuts, while more than 100 backpacks were distributed. The event was backed by the Walla Walla Housing Authority, Akin, Walla Walla Toyota, and Greater Health Now, alongside several other area barbershops and individual stylists.
Connecting Confidence and Personal Experiences
Barbers frequently cite their own upbringing as the primary motivation for launching these community programs. In Lakewood, Ohio, Ryan Chobody of the Barber Lounge posted on social media offering free haircuts to any child in need. Following a crowded opening Sunday where three barbers cut the hair of 32 children in four hours, Chobody began scheduling additional free cuts throughout the week and plans to make the initiative an annual tradition. Chobody said. It really (can be like it) it changed your whole mood and everything.
Similarly, in Tucson, Arizona, Ryan Collins of Be The Light Ministries organized a “Haircuts for Hope” event at FreshCutz on Oracle to provide haircuts and school-supplied backpacks. Some of these children haven’t had a haircut in six months to a year,
Collins said. When they get one and a backpack too, their smiles light up the room.
In Flint, Michigan, Maurice Dantzler, co-owner of Big Daddy’s Barber Shop, organized a Sunday back-to-school event to provide free cuts and book bags. It is a need to bring the community back, bring the community together as a family,
Dantzler said, emphasizing the role local businesses play in supporting students.
