Barcelona seems to have learned its lesson from Pedri’s marathon season a few years ago. The midfielder played 73 games in about a year at a young age and was subsequently injured frequently. Barça wants to avoid this scenario with Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí.
Pedri was eighteen when, after a long and grueling season at Barcelona, he missed almost a minute for Spain at the 2021 European Championship. Only to receive an invitation to the Olympic Games in Tokyo and not miss a single match there either. No one played more games that season than eighteen-year-old Pedri.
With Yamal (16) and Cubarsí (17), Barcelona once again has two teenagers who excel at the highest level. The attacker in particular has already completed a lot of flying hours at Barcelona, and both have already made their debut for the Spanish national team. This year too, an Olympic tournament will follow the European Championships. Barcelona is not considering letting the duo participate in both tournaments.
According to Spanish Sport Barça club management contacted the Spanish federation (RFEF) and left a clear message. If Yamal and Cubarsí play an important role at the European Championships, the club will not give permission to send the duo to the Games. The Olympic Games do not fall under the flag of FIFA, so clubs do not have to donate their players for that tournament. There is an obligation at the European Championships.
