Barça’s Disappointing Season Opener: A Draw Against Getafe and Missed Opportunities

Barça does not start its season as it had hoped. The Catalans conceded a draw against a team from Getafe who were not looking for anything else (0-0), Sunday evening, during the 1st day of La Liga. The Azulones had a few chances at the end of the game to achieve a perfect hold-up. This match, enamelled with many bad gestures, in particular nudges, did not mark the spirits for its quality of football. These are already two points lost for the Barcelonans from the first day of La Liga.

Watching José Bordalas jump in the last minutes of added time, waiting firmly for the final whistle, we understood that the Getafe coach was satisfied with his shot. A well-placed defense, very aggressive players and Barça did not know how to force the decision in this disjointed match from start to finish. It is not, however, for lack of having had opportunities. But with only four shots on target in fourteen strikes, Xavi’s players clearly lacked efficiency.

Barça fell into the trap

Raphinha stumbled twice over David Soria (16th, 36th) and Ilkay Gündogan too (2nd, 77th). When the goalkeeper, voted man of the match by La Liga, was beaten, he had help from his teammates. He was replaced by Gaston Alvarez who pushed back a header from Robert Lewandowski on the line and cut off many Barcelona centers.

Meanwhile, his teammates were in charge of cracking the Catalans, Damian Suarez in the lead. The Uruguayan spent a good part of his game nudging Robert Lewandowski or any other player who was near him when the ball trailed several meters away.

Mata was not left out with several bad gestures, the last of which, a sole on the tibia of Ronald Araujo, earned him a second yellow card and therefore an expulsion (57th). Before that, Lewandowski and Raphinha had shown the first signs of annoyance by responding to the fouls they suffered with the same fouls. The Brazilian definitely cracked by nudging Gaston Alvarez who forced César Soto Grado to take the red card out of his pocket (42nd).

26 minutes of added time accumulated

After Juanmi Latasa (4th) and Juan Iglesias (30th) who had the best chances of the game for the Azulones, Portu with a shot deflected by Gavi (90th + 15) and Lozano with a header not on target from the corner which followed (90th + 16) did not go far from offering three unexpected points to theirs. Additional time, there will have been in this interminable match: 10 minutes in the first period and 9 announced in the second which turned into 16 additional minutes!

While Xavi was watching the end of the match from the stands after being sent off in turn (71st), Barcelona thought they could get a penalty for a kick from Iglesias in the back of Araujo’s foot (90th + 11). But a preliminary hand from Gavi was whistled by Mr. Soto Grado who went to view the images at the edge of the field. Before registering a few minutes later the third consecutive draw of the Catalans at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez with an identical score: 0-0. And Barça already loses two points in the championship.
