Barely released, the biopic on Amy Winehouse is already controversial: “It’s not her story”

A childhood friend of the singer has given her opinion on the film and says she wouldn’t be happy to see the way she is portrayed.

Since April 24, “Back to Black” has been broadcast in Belgian cinemas. In England, the film was released earlier, allowing certain people close to Amy Winehouse to discover the biopic dedicated to her.

It must be said that the film is compared to the documentary “Amy” by Asif Kapadia released in 2015 which was rewarded with several Grammy Awards. However, the singer’s father was not portrayed positively. In “Back to Black” by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Mitch Winehouse comes off better.

The relationship between Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil is, however, widely discussed. The couple had married and their various addictions were widely covered in the press at the time. The main interested party considers the film as a representation close to realitybut for Tyler James, a childhood friend of the singer, the film would not have pleased the star.

He recognizes in the columns of Sun : « I liked Blake and I’m glad he wasn’t made out to be a complete villain, because he wasn’t (…) Often there’s no sympathy for him, like if he was responsible for everything. » But he adds that Amy Winehouse would be “ furious » to see the way in which it is represented: “ I didn’t expect it to be realistic or completely accurate. But it was worse than I thought. It was terrible and that doesn’t do it justice. »

He concludes : ” They have watered down, glossed over his extraordinary life and omitted whole sections of his story. It’s not his story. This film could have told much more and given a more complete picture of the person Amy was (…) She was the most astonishing and beautiful person I have met in my life. She was incredibly funny, intelligent and smart. This is not said. »
