The refloating of the barge which sank last Monday in the Scheldt near Dendermonde (East Flanders) has begun. The operation may make it possible to find the boatman, originally from Charleroi, and his two dogs, who have been missing since the boat loaded with stones sank.
A large workboat arrived on the scene with a crane and a floating pontoon equipped with lifting equipment to lift heavy loads. With the ship lying on its side, it will be righted under water. A second floating pontoon will be placed at the front of the ship. A crane boat will then unload the hold, which will then be drained, which should allow the barge to float again. The wreckage will then be searched by prosecutors.
Navigation, both professional and recreational, is prohibited in the area until Friday inclusive. The towpaths on both banks will also be completely closed to pedestrians and cyclists throughout the operation.
