A barge loaded with stones sank on Monday around 10:45 a.m. in Dendermonde. The boatman is missing, but the emergency services do not know if he was present on board at the time of the incident.
The boat, 50 meters long and 6 meters wide, encountered problems for reasons still unknown. A major rescue operation has been launched to save possible victims, but the current of the Scheldt is currently too strong and does not allow the firefighters to reach the wreckage.
The boat has completely disappeared under the surface of the water. The rescuers were able to identify the boat and the King’s prosecutor was informed.
Three sniffer dogs were brought to the scene of the accident.
