BARMM Ramadan Meal Plan 2024: Healthy Fasting Guide & Updates

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Cotabato City, Philippines – The Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has launched a 30-day meal plan designed to promote safe and healthy fasting practices during the upcoming month of Ramadan. The initiative, dubbed “Wastong Meal Plan, Healthy Ramadhan,” aims to provide guidance to residents on nutritional intake before dawn (Suhoor) and after sunset (Iftar), ensuring they maintain their well-being throughout the holy month.

The meal plan comes as Ramadan approaches, a period of significant spiritual and communal importance for Muslims. Maintaining proper nutrition during fasting is crucial, and the BARMM health ministry recognizes the need to support residents in making informed dietary choices. The initiative underscores the regional government’s commitment to public health and well-being, particularly during culturally significant observances.

Copies of the meal plan are currently being prepared for distribution across the Bangsamoro region, according to the Ministry of Health. The plan offers suggestions for balanced meals that provide essential nutrients and energy to sustain individuals throughout their fasting hours. The focus is on incorporating locally sourced, affordable, and readily available food items.

Strengthening Ties Between BARMM and UNOPS

The launch of the Ramadan meal plan coincides with renewed efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Bangsamoro Government and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Representatives from UNOPS met with key Bangsamoro Government officials in Cotabato City on February 11-12, 2026, to discuss upcoming projects and enhance support for regional development. UNOPS is a key implementing partner of the BARMM government, providing technical expertise, infrastructure support, and assistance with project implementation aligned with long-term government priorities.

Bangsamoro Parliament Speaker Mohammad Yacob expressed appreciation for the continued support of development partners, stating, “The steadfast support of our development partners shows that BARMM government is not alone towards lasting peace and continuous development in the region for the Bangsamoro people.” He similarly voiced hope for continued infrastructure projects in the region, emphasizing the importance of serving the Bangsamoro people effectively.

Focus on Institutional Capacity and Development Programs

During the meetings, UNOPS representatives also engaged with officials from the Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority (BPDA), led by Engr. Kadil Sulaik. Discussions centered on reviewing recent institutional developments and exploring how UNOPS’ project management expertise can further support the region’s development programs. UNOPS supports the government and other partners in areas such as sustainable procurement, infrastructure, governance, and logistical support, with a focus on building national capacity and strengthening community resilience.

The collaboration between the BARMM government and UNOPS extends to various initiatives, including strengthening governance and justice systems. UNOPS has trained over 930 justice personnel on the e-Subpoena system through the European Union-funded GOJUST program, aiming to improve the responsiveness and accountability of justice services throughout the country. UNOPS is involved in infrastructure projects, including fishery and port rehabilitation, and hospital construction.

Operate Schedule Adjustments for Ramadan

In a separate announcement, the Bangsamoro government has also adjusted the work schedule for all ministries, offices, and agencies during the month of Ramadan. The adjustments were announced on February 28, 2025, to accommodate the fasting period and allow employees to observe religious traditions.

The Ministry of Health’s Ramadan meal plan and the government’s work schedule adjustments demonstrate a comprehensive approach to supporting the Bangsamoro community during this important time. As Ramadan approaches, the focus remains on ensuring the health, well-being, and spiritual fulfillment of residents across the region.

Looking ahead, the successful distribution and implementation of the “Wastong Meal Plan, Healthy Ramadhan” will be closely monitored to assess its impact on the health and nutritional status of the Bangsamoro population during the fasting month. Continued collaboration between the BARMM government and its development partners, such as UNOPS, will be vital in sustaining progress and addressing the evolving needs of the region.
