Residents of Basel’s Kleinbasel neighborhood are raising serious concerns about a local establishment, officially registered as a pizzeria and bar, which they allege is operating as a brothel and potentially involved in human trafficking. The situation has prompted a petition to local authorities and renewed scrutiny of resources dedicated to combating exploitation in the city.
An anonymous resident described witnessing suspicious activity, including women being escorted into the building with clients and appearing in “work attire” on balconies. “We regularly observe dubious scenes with very young women,” the resident stated, expressing concern about their rights and well-being. The complaints extend beyond the alleged prostitution, with reports of late-night noise, public disorder, and discarded waste.
The growing unease comes as authorities acknowledge the challenges in addressing potential human trafficking. Christoph Hochuli, a member of the cantonal council (EVP), pointed to limited resources within the Basel police department, noting that only 150 full-time positions are dedicated to combating human trafficking. “That is far too little,” Hochuli stated, highlighting the complex nature of these investigations, which require building trust with potential victims.
Whereas prostitution itself is not illegal in Switzerland, the sex industry is recognized as particularly vulnerable to exploitative practices. The concerns in Kleinbasel are prompting calls for increased vigilance and a more robust response from law enforcement and local government.
Police Investigation and Previous Raid
Authorities confirmed a raid took place at the establishment on Sperrstrasse approximately a year and a half ago. Basel’s Security Director Stephanie Eymann confirmed that six individuals were arrested during the raid on suspicion of violating foreign and integration laws, as well as potential involvement in human trafficking and facilitating prostitution. Though, the Justice and Security Department declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
According to officials, investigations into human trafficking are complex, often hampered by the vulnerability of victims, who may be dependent on their alleged exploiters and hesitant to cooperate with authorities, particularly if they lack legal residency. “Such procedures take a long time because the police must build trust with the victims,” Eymann explained, emphasizing that the police take human trafficking “very seriously.”
The operators of the bar have not responded to requests for comment, and it remains unclear whether they possess the necessary permits for operating a sex establishment. The cantonal authorities have not publicly disclosed information regarding permits for this specific location.
Community Response and Calls for Action
Frustrated residents feel they have been largely ignored by local authorities. “We feel passed around by the various offices. We have already filed noise complaints, but it doesn’t facilitate,” said the anonymous resident. In response, a petition has been launched and an open letter delivered to Security Director Eymann, garnering significant support from the community.
The petition seeks increased attention to the situation and a more effective response from the authorities. Hochuli is also advocating for increased resources to support more thorough investigations and prosecutions. “Human trafficking is a particularly serious crime. We absolutely must pay closer attention, both to punish the perpetrators and to protect the victims,” he stated.
The Basel police have designated the fight against human trafficking as a priority, but the limited staffing levels raise questions about the capacity to effectively address the issue. In Zurich, for example, 13 individuals work within the human trafficking unit, and a dedicated point of contact exists for victims and those reporting suspicious activity.
