The Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) is reminded to improve its performance when carrying out supervision in the 2024 simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada). It is believed that many cases of abuse of government authority in the last presidential election will also be found during the regional election process.

This was conveyed by regional autonomy observer, Djohermansyah Djohan, Monday (8/4). According to him, Bawaslu’s lack of firmness in the 2024 presidential election could have an impact on the simultaneous regional elections scheduled for November 2024.

“The effects of the central government’s abuse of authority could spread to the regional elections later. For example, the distribution of social assistance is becoming more massive in the regions by the incumbents. They think there are no penalties like during the presidential election,” said Djohermansyah.

Not only that, cases that are often found during regional elections are the deployment of state civil servants (ASN) and misuse of budgets for the interests of certain candidates.

A number of regional heads are also known to have carried out transfers of officials even though they were canceled because they missed the deadline six months before the regional elections were held.

Such methods, said Djohermansyah, are efforts by certain candidates to secure regional elections in line with the policies of the officials who appointed them.

According to him, the deployment of regional officials has a big influence on the community in making choices. Moreover, regional officials who have important positions will be able to boost the votes of certain candidates they support during the regional elections.

“When cases found in the presidential election are not handled well, this becomes a serious problem during the regional elections. For this reason, Bawaslu must improve and regain public trust,” said the former Director General of Regional Autonomy at the Ministry of Home Affairs. (Z-11)
