Bayern’s “Basta” Stance Against Super League: Strengthening National Leagues

Bayern’s “Basta” remains!

The German record champions definitely do not want to take part in a possible Super League. Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen (56) confirmed this after Thursday’s stunning ruling, according to which the path for the billion-dollar league would be legally clear. The initiators of the mega-project won a corresponding legal dispute against UEFA and FIFA before the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

Super League? Without Bavaria!

Dreesen said in a statement on the Bayern homepage: “The door for the Super League at FC Bayern remains closed. The judgment does not change the attitude of FC Bayern and the attitude of the ECA (European Club Association, editor) that such a competition would represent an attack on the importance of the national leagues and the statics of European football.”

The home of the record champions remains the national league, emphasizes Dreesen: “The Bundesliga forms the foundation of FC Bayern, just as all national leagues represent the foundation of European football clubs. Therefore, it is our duty and our deep conviction to strengthen them, not weaken them.”

There is support from Bayern supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (68). In an interview with the Italian “Gazetta dello Sport” he spoke out again against the Super League, but admitted: When the idea came up in spring 2021, he was very worried about European football!

Rummenigge, then chairman of the board: “You didn’t come to me. They tried Oliver Kahn, my designated successor at the time. Uli Hoeneß, President Herbert Hainer and I said: Never with us!”

Rummenigge explains: “I was worried. There were twelve of them, they had tried in vain to convince us and others, they were at the end of their strength. I thought: What if they really make a revolution? That would be pure chaos.”

From a purely legal perspective, the conditions for the Super League have now been created. But who should take part? In addition to Bayern, other top Bundesliga clubs such as Dortmund and Leipzig reject the project. Top clubs from England and France’s flagship club Paris Saint-Germain also speak out against it.

And that before Christmas… There has never been such a Mbappé moment!
