Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has warned of his country’s defeat in its defensive war against Russia if the US Congress does not approve a military aid package for Kyiv. “If Congress does not help Ukraine, Ukraine will lose the war,” Zelensky said on Sunday, April 7, during a video conference on the United24 platform. Without US support, Ukraine will have a “difficult time winning or even surviving as a country,” the president added. Zelensky also warned that if Ukraine is defeated, the Russian Federation will attack “other states.”
On April 6, during an interview, Zelensky said that the Ukrainian army is deprived of the possibility of a counteroffensive against Russia due to a shortage of ammunition. He also indicated that Ukraine needs 25 American Patriot air defense systems to protect against ongoing massive Russian attacks. “Closing the sky,” in particular, is necessary in Kharkov, which, according to Zelensky, is under conditions of “constant Russian terror”: the city is daily subjected to shelling and strikes by guided aerial bombs (UAB).
Disputes in the US Parliament about aid to Ukraine
New funding for military assistance to Ukraine, which has been repelling Russian aggression for two years, cannot be agreed upon in the US Congress since the fall of 2023. On February 13, the Democratic-controlled upper house of the US parliament, the Senate, approved a bill to allocate $95.3 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Kyiv should receive $60.06 billion of this.
However, this document may not pass the House of Representatives, where the Republican Party has a majority. Speaker of the Lower House of Congress Mike Johnson has already stated that the bill in its current form is obviously unpassable, since it does not include funding for measures to strengthen the protection of the US southern border, which Republicans insist on.
