BBC chief resigns over Boris Johnson loan controversy

LONDON (AP) — BBC Chairman Richard Sharp resigned his post Friday following a report revealed he had breached government rules on public appointments.

The publicly funded national chain has come under pressure following the revelation that Sharp, a donor to the Conservative Party, helped arrange a loan for then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2021, weeks before he was elected to the charge at the recommendation of the executive.

Sharp said he resigned to “put the BBC’s interests first” following committing an “unintentional” breach of the rules.

The incident report prepared by attorney Adam Heppinstall is scheduled to be released on Friday.
