A young couple from mainland China recently traveled to Qingdao and fell asleep on a rock by the sea. When they woke up, they found that their surroundings had been submerged in seawater. At around 2 pm on April 5, the Shibaote Rescue Center on the west coast of Qingdao received a call for help. Two foreign tourists were trapped on the rocks near Liansan Island. The five team members immediately pushed out the lifeboat and sailed from the sea to the trapped location.
“Peninsula Metropolis Daily” reported that search and rescue team member Yang Chuanhui said that the reef area on this beach is very large, and the farthest point is almost one nautical mile from the shore. After high tide, the entire reef area is submerged. The height of some reefs is two or three meters, so it is basically impossible to wade across from the shore.
“The situation was critical at that time, and the entire reef was about to be submerged.” Yang Chuanhui said that after they arrived with a boat, they were unable to get to it because there were many reefs around them. So, several team members took their life jackets, jumped into the sea and walked to the reef area. After putting on life jackets for the two trapped people, the team members carried them safely to the lifeboat.
“The water is almost 1 meter deep. They are not familiar with the situation and it is dangerous to enter the water rashly.” Yang Chuanhui said, but the rocks were covered with oysters. When they walked, their legs were cut in many places. After being rescued and brought ashore, both of them expressed fear. It was learned that the two were tourists from out of town. Seeing the beautiful sea view, they went to the rocks to take pictures and look for small seafood. During the trip, the two of them got a little tired, so they fell asleep next to each other.
When they woke up, they were surrounded by sea water. Their location was almost on the side of the reef closest to the sea, and they couldn’t see how deep the water was. The two people panicked and quickly called for help. Fortunately, rescuers arrived at the scene immediately. The team members carried them for more than ten meters in the sea before they were safely transferred to the ship.
Wan Xuebo, the person in charge of the Shibaote Rescue Center on the west coast of Qingdao, said that local reefs and beaches can be used to catch small crabs and small conches, which attracts many tourists. The characteristic of these two bays is that the reef area is particularly large. The farthest place is one nautical mile from the shore to the reef. Not only that, after low tide, the height of the reef is two to three meters, and after high tide, the sea water around the reef can be four to five meters high. There are also many undercurrents around the reef. Once tourists are trapped, it will be very difficult to rescue them.
Wan Xuebo emphasized that even if they are familiar with the reef area, lifeboats are crashed almost every year. To this end, the rescue team has also stepped up patrols. When the tide is high, they will be at the beach to persuade people. Once they encounter someone trapped, they will go to the rescue as soon as possible. Since 2021, they have participated in forty or fifty rescues every year. In order to improve their rescue capabilities, the team members also conduct regular training, and they also constantly update their equipment to better respond to emergencies.
