We change the food and wine pairings a little at the Beautiful Hortense, by replacing dishes with books! Don’t we say that the reading is food for the soul, after all ? Behind this beautiful blue facade, we find an astonishing place, at the crossroads between literary bar, wine cellar, bookstore but also art gallery. Books of all kinds mingle with bottles of wine, since 1997, from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. You can choose to lean on the bar and sip your Burgundy or Saint-Émilion, or retire to the back room, more intimate and cozy.
This astonishing mix recalls a bygone time, when great writers mingled with other artists and local residents, a drink in hand, in the local bar. At Belle Hortense, we are surrounded by art and words, thanks to the current photo exhibition hanging on the walls and literary classics, which you can draw at random while enjoying your drink. This place obviously had to house books, since its name comes from a novel by Jacques Roubaudwhose action takes place in rue Vieille du Temple, where the bookstore is located!
Brigitte, who has been operating for decades in this old-world setting in the heart of the Marais, will be able to guide you in finding your evening wine, or your bottle to take away. No question of drinking just anything, here, the wines are biofrom French soil and all available by the glass ! The bistro dishes are also careful and fresh, prepared in the kitchen of Petit Fer à Cheval, across the street! We opted for a simple plate of peasant charcuterie, direct from the producer, to accompany a Côtes du Rhône and a Chablis, but the menu is large enough to find what you’re looking for!
