Beaver-Induced Flooding Threatens The Balade du Geer: Exploring the Challenges and Solutions

2023-11-05 01:39:41

The Balade du Geer is very well known and appreciated in the valley and the commune of the same name. However, since beavers have taken up residence there, it frequently happens that this walk is flooded. This is currently the case since walkers have no choice but to turn back.

The observation is clear, following a few hundred meters, the first bridge encountered is under water. Impossible to guess its depth. So unless they are equipped with boots, walkers have little choice.

The municipality invests each year in the maintenance of the walk but faced with beavers, it finds itself helpless because the animal and its habitat are protected.

A difficult cohabitation which appears to have no real solution, as noted during this walk with the mayor of Geer Dominique Servais.
