The director’s reaction to this prank could have been terrible if not for Faina Georgievna’s lightning-quick response. Hearing “no,” she was not taken aback, but burst into angry tirades against her wayward stepdaughter and her father. The curses and threats turned out to be so excellent that the directors, without further hesitation, remade this episode, including Ranevskaya’s brilliant impromptu.
