Since its discovery two centuries ago, the world of dinosaurs has fascinated the general public and mobilized researchers to answer a question: how could such powerful creatures disappear after dominating the planet for two hundred million years? The event would be linked to the impact of an asteroid, which fell 66 million years ago in the Chicxulub region in Mexico.
The dinosaurs became extinct 66 million years ago. No doubt because of a meteorite, the effects of which can be imagined in the Chicxulub crater (Gulf of Mexico): giant earthquakes and fires, tidal waves (including a wave 1.5 km high), showers of molten rock… followed by a ten-year nuclear winter. The power of the impact caused by the asteroid is estimated at 100,000 billion tons of TNT, or seven billion times higher than that of the Hiroshima bomb, created a shock wave that spread throughout the globe in just a few minutes…. The central ring lies today at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, under 600 meters of limestone sediments.
