Before the UN, Alberto Fernández criticized the IMF and asked to “promote social justice in the world”

In his last speech as president before the General Assembly of the United Nations, Alberto Fernandez reiterated his criticism against International Monetary Fund (IMF), considered that «It’s time to promote social justice«, and demanded a reform of the «abusive» international financial architecture.

“It is impossible to want to achieve an equitable future, promoting the continuity of the same logic that has generated the inequality in which we live,” said the president of the international organization.

Before, Fernández began his speech by highlighting the effects of the pandemic and the climate crisis on global reality, and then claimed a reform of the international financial system and denounce the burden of debt in middle-income countries.

«International financial engineering appears abusive and intact“How can we achieve sustainable development without financing to help do it?” said the President.

And he added, along those lines: «The international financial system does not demonstrate the will to adapt to a world that wants to recover lost equity.. It only serves to concentrate income to marginalize large regions of the world«.

In another passage of his presentation, initially focused on the economy, Fernández emphasized that «It’s time to promote social justice in the world» and questioned the International Monetary Fund (IMF), specifically, the surcharges it applies to debtor states.

Regarding the credit organization, he maintained that «cannot raise its interest every time the American Federal Reserve raises its rates» and described as «shameful» the collection of surcharges to «many countries».

During his presentation, his last as president, he condemned “the terrible humanitarian and material consequences” of the war in ukrainewhile remembering the «responsibility» of multilateral organizations in matters of development, peace and global security.

Fernandez, on the other hand, emphasized in the protection of human rights and declared himself “proud” of the “four decades of uninterrupted democracy” in the country.

“The protection of human rights has been a fundamental part of the path taken,” he said and highlighted the choice of the ESMA Memory Site Museum, main clandestine detention center during the last civil-military dictatorship, as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Finally, and after condemning the sanctions that USA applied on Venezuelathe President reaffirmed “the legitimate and imprescriptible rights of sovereignty of the Argentine Republic on the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas«.

He regretted, in this context, that the United Kingdom “continues to refuse to resume negotiations” in accordance with the resolutions of the UN and its Special Committee on Decolonization.
