ALGIERS-The work of the 14th Extraordinary Congress of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) began on Sunday in Algiers, for the election of a new leadership of the Trade Union Federation.
The 800 participants in this Congress, placed under the theme “All for a renewed trade union union”*, will have to elect a new leadership of the UGTA, and will proceed to the adoption of the statutes of the UGTA to adapt it to the law on the exercise of trade union rights 02-23, to the elaboration of a development plan for the Union and the updating of its activity according to developments at the national and international levels.
In anticipation of the holding of this 14th Congress of the UGTA, regional congresses were organized across the different regions of the country to examine the preliminary draft relating to the legal texts, in particular the statute and the internal regulations of the UGTA to submit it to the Congress for debate, enrichment and adoption.
In his speech delivered at the opening of the work, the acting secretary general of the UGTA, Hamou Touahria, who announced his non-candidacy, called on the members of this union organization to make the next step “a new start by asserting its principles aimed at enshrining the values of fraternity and tolerance”.
On this occasion, he praised “the trade union achievements obtained under the mandate of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and which have made it possible to improve the lives of workers, in particular through the promotion of investment and the creation of jobs to develop the national economy”.
