An accident in the Beijing metro during rush hour left more than 30 people injured on Thursday evening when two carriages broke away from a train on an above-ground section, according to authorities.

The incident occurred at 6:57 p.m. (10:57 a.m. GMT) when the last two carriages of a metro train became detached from those in front of them, according to the same source.

Messages on social media report people falling to the ground or others complaining of pain in their kidneys.

Media broadcast images showing passengers keeping calm in a partially darkened carriage, or others using emergency hammers to break a window and get out of the train.

The train was not in a tunnel but in an above-ground section, near Xi’erqi station. He was heading towards Changping, a district located in the north of the Chinese capital.

This type of incident in China is relatively unusual in metros, those in large cities being for the vast majority relatively new, modern and safe.
