Beijing: Washington crosses the red line in Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan means “crossing the red line” of the “one China” principle. A statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry yesterday said that Minister Wang had a telephone conversation with the diplomatic advisor to French President Emmanuel Bonn, and conveyed to him China’s concerns regarding a possible visit of the US official to Taiwan. Wang noted that the United States stresses the need to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but “does not hesitate to cross the red line of the one-China principle” regarding Taiwan, considering this a “double standard.” The Chinese official stressed that Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan would be a “very dangerous signal to the outside world.” “If the speaker of the US House of Representatives, as a political leader in the United States, deliberately visits Taiwan, it will be a malicious provocation to China’s sovereignty and a flagrant interference in its internal affairs,” Wang said. Wang said his country would “respond resolutely” if the US side persists in its current stance on Taiwan, stressing that Washington “will bear the consequences of its action.” It is noteworthy that Nancy Pelosi canceled her Asian tour, which was scheduled last week, due to her infection with the Corona virus. In the event of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, this will be the first visit to the country by a current speaker of the US House of Representatives in 25 years, following Republican Newt Gingrich’s trip in 1997. The Chinese Ministry of Defense protested, last Thursday, the intention of the United States of America to approve a military equipment deal with Taiwan, To support the Patriot missile system.
