Belarus Seeks Migration Dialogue Amid Border Concerns
Minsk, June 21 – Belarus is advocating for open and pragmatic discussions with neighboring nations regarding ongoing migration challenges. This announcement was made by Larisa Belskaya, the Permanent representative of The Republic Of Belarus to The UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
Belskaya addressed thes concerns during an interactive dialogue focusing on the rights of migrants, held at the 59th session of The UN Human Rights Council.
Irregular Migration: A Growing Concern
Belskaya highlighted that irregular migration presents significant risks, which she believes are compounded by the increasing militarization of borders and deviations from established international asylum protocols.
Belarus, she stated, is currently grappling with the repercussions of these policies along its borders with Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland.
Did You know? The EU has been actively addressing irregular migration since 2021, focusing on preserving the integrity of its external borders.
Allegations of violent Pushbacks
“Belarus has consistently documented cases of violent pushbacks, where individuals are deprived of essential medical and other assistance,” Belskaya asserted. Mistreatment, she added, ofen leads to preventable deaths among migrants.
According to belskaya, over the past four years, more than 80 migrant deaths resulting from pushbacks into Belarus have been recorded, with over 15 occurring this year alone.
Investigations and Accusations
Belarusian authorities are reportedly investigating incidents involving violence and human rights violations against migrants attempting to transit toward The European Union.
Testimonies from victims suggest that neighboring countries have established “filtering centers” where detainees are subjected to beatings, have their money and phones confiscated, before being forcibly pushed back into Belarusian territory.
“We implore you to maintain focus on the tragic loss of life at EU borders and respond with appropriate measures to halt these abuses and human rights violations against migrants,” Belskaya urged.
Call For Cooperation
Belskaya emphasized belarus’s interest in collaborating with The UN Special Rapporteur and expressed readiness for constructive dialogue with neighboring countries, including joint investigations into deaths and disappearances.
“We express our hope that our neighbors will shift away from confrontation, demonstrate common sense, and exhibit the political will necessary to rebuild trust and cooperation in joint border management,” Belskaya concluded.
