The Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenkoone of the closest allies of the Russian president Vladimir Putinannounced this Sunday that he will run as a candidate in the 2025 presidential elections.

“I will compete,” Lukashenko confirmed to a group of journalists after voting in the parliamentary elections taking place this day, in which only candidates from the four ruling parties nominated, because the opposition called for a boycott of the process.

“No one, no responsible president, would abandon the people who have accompanied him in battle,” said the leader. “The more difficult the situation, the more they disrupt our society, the more pressure they put on you, me and society, the sooner I will compete in those elections,” he added.

“We are still a year away from the presidential elections, many things can change,” Lukashenko added, according to EFE. “We know how to draw conclusions from our mistakes. Therefore, do not expect anything,” he asserted, reaffirming that he will not allow his detractors to promote a change of power. Therefore, he said that he cannot “leave tomorrow,” because it would be a betrayal of his country.

Lukashenko, 69, has ruled Belarus with a heavy hand since 1994 and is one of the Kremlin’s closest allies. Many analysts see him, in fact, as a politician totally dependent on Moscow.

The European Union does not recognize Lukashenko as the head of state of Belarus, something that seems to be of no concern to him. This day he said that his country does not require the approval of the West at all.
