Last week, a couple was arrested at Antalya airport. The reason ? The two Flemings are accused by the local authorities of having stolen three classified archaeological stones. The 28-year-old woman has not been allowed to leave the country since then, while her partner (31) returned to Belgium.
For their part, the two Belgians claim to have picked up the stones on a vacant lot, without suspecting anything. They assure that they wanted to place them… in their aquarium.

Problem: the objects were examined by local experts. And it turns out, according to Turkish media, that these stones are in fact archaeological pieces of great value, protected by law, “because of their qualities”. “The expertise made it possible to determine that the piece decorated with two stylized rosettes was an element of architectural decoration. As for the two pieces of marble, they are pieces of floor covering,” Turkish media reported, citing the expert report.
This expertise is a real stab for the Antwerp woman, still incarcerated in Turkey. For our colleagues from Nieuwsblad, she affirmed that she was confident about the outcome of the case and that the Turkish authorities would realize their error. From now on, it remains to be seen what she risks and what consequence local justice will give.
