Belgian director Raoul Servais has died

Belgian filmmaker Raoul Servais died at the age of 94 in Leffinge, his family announced on Sunday evening.

In October 2022, Raoul Servais was still present at the Ghent Film Festival (Film Fest Gent) to attend the world premiere of his 16th short film “Der Lange Kerl”, which he had directed with Rudy Pinceel. He had received the Joseph Plateau honorary prize for all of his work.

Raoul Servais was born in 1928 in Ostend. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. There he developed his style and experimented with animation techniques. In 1963 he founded the animated film department there, where he taught for many years.

Throughout his career, Raoul Servais has won over 60 awards. He notably won the Palme d’or for short films at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979, with Harpya. In 2019, he will also obtain an honorary Magritte.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Raoul Servais was also a painter and illustrator. In 2019, he donated part of his archives to the King Baudouin Foundation.
