Senegal “offers companies seeking to establish themselves there remarkable stability and many advantages, political stability, security, monetary stability, appreciable quality of life and favorable geographical position”, declared yesterday, Princess Astrid, at the occasion of the opening of the first Belgian economic mission 2023; through which, Belgium wants to open new perspectives in its cooperation with Senegal.
By Justin GOMIS – The choice of Senegal to host the first Belgian economic mission in 2023 is not fortuitous, if we are to believe the words of Princess Astrid, who leads the said mission on behalf of the Belgian King. The choice of Senegal, according to the representative of his majesty, the Belgian King, “was in fact obvious in view of the diversity and the multitude of links which unite our two flat countries. Because the economic and social relations that exist between Belgium and Senegal have continued to grow in recent years”. This is evidenced by “the flow of goods between the two countries, which greatly exceeded one billion euros in 2022”. According to the princess, “Senegal represents in Africa a partner of the future for European companies and investors, Belgians in particular, and offers a great economic and commercial gateway to the sub-region”. According to him, the country of Teranga “offers to companies seeking to establish themselves there, remarkable stability and many advantages, political stability, security, monetary stability, appreciable quality of life and favorable geographical position”. To this, she adds a real economic dynamism supported by a real political will such as “the Emerging Senegal Plan, the establishment of special economic zones and major infrastructure works contribute to the attractiveness of Senegal, the important measures implemented place by the Senegalese authorities to improve the business climate, strengthen the training of young people, promote investment and develop the private sector”.
This economic mission, which will be held until May 25, 2023, is made up of hundreds of businessmen, business leaders, representatives of academic institutions and senior representatives of the Belgian government. This delegation should thus discuss with the Senegalese private sector for this partnership opportunity which opens up new perspectives in the cooperation between Belgium and Senegal.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, who presided over the opening ceremony, thus notes “the fine articulation of the mission which brings out promising sectors of activity, namely: intermodal port logistics; biotechnology and pharmaceuticals; renewable energies ; water and the environment; cultural and creative industries”. In other words, sectors which, according to Me Aïssata Tall Sall, “correspond to the ambition of President Macky Sall to establish sovereignty in the food, pharmaceutical, medical and energy fields; all backed by a strong national private sector, the engine of our economic emergence by 2035”. As such, recalls the minister, the government has undertaken reforms to improve the business environment. This has enabled it to make significant progress in terms of competitiveness. Senegal has succeeded in creating integrated industrial platforms erected in special economic zones, the establishment of a one-stop shop with the aim of simplifying and expediting the administrative procedures prior to the creation of a company, the adoption of a law on public-private partnerships, among others.
