Belgian Employers, Automatic Salary Indexation, and Political Maneuvering: The Debate Unveiled

”The big employers, the FEB (Federation of Belgian Enterprises), is once again launching an attack against the automatic indexation of salaries […] He takes it through winding paths, claiming to make indexation fairer because it is reserved for low and medium salaries. This creates confusion, and this is of course what the FEB is looking for, to attack automatic indexing in a roundabout way. But I will be clear: we are not touching the automatic indexation of salaries!”

The leader of the Brussels socialists, who will be head of the list in the Region during the elections of June 9, assured that the PS also wanted to revise the 1996 law: “We tell it (the FEB) that we want to give back to the social partners, and therefore unions, the freedom to freely negotiate salary increases. Salary increases beyond indexation and beyond scale increases.”

Under the Vivaldi coalition, the automatic indexation of salaries was maintained, as was the law on competitiveness.

Ahmed Laaouej also sent a dig at the MR: “Some are shopping and marketing by bringing media stars, candidates, or candidates supposed to bring back votes not for their ideas, but for the image and their supposed fame. We do things differently. We asked our comrade from the FGTB, Estelle Ceulemans, to extend her union fight with a political fight alongside us on the European list.”
