A 23-year-old Belgian fisherman died on Tuesday in an accident on a Belgian fishing boat which was off the English coast, the Flemish Maritime and Coastal Services Agency (Agentschap Maritieme Dienstverlening en Kust) and the Ghent labor auditor, West Flanders division.
The accident took place on Tuesday afternoon on the O.51 Stormvogel, a fishing boat with five crew members, while the boat was off the coast of Plymouth, England. According to initial findings, the victims were buried under several hundred kilos of fishing equipment.
A 23-year-old man from Bredene died on the spot from his injuries. Another fisherman, aged 27, from Middelkerke, was seriously injured and transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Cornwall.
An investigation, launched by the Ghent labor auditor, will have to shed light on the exact circumstances of the accident. The Federal Shipping Accident Investigation Agency (OFEAN) has also been informed and will further investigate the causes of the accident.
The Stormvogel is currently in Plymouth Harbour.
