Bodies of two hikers missing for decades found after Swiss glacier melts in the Swiss Alps
The bodies of two Belgian mountaineers who vanished in the Swiss Alps more than thirty years ago have been discovered after being exposed by a retreating glacier, according to regional police officials. DNA analysis conducted at a hospital in Sion confirmed the remains belong to two men aged 39 and 41 who went missing near the Weissmies mountain in 1992.
The Trift Glacier Discovery and Identification
According to police in Switzerland’s southwestern Valais region, a hiker came across the human remains on July 26 on the Trift Glacier, located south of Lucerne. Authorities promptly organized a recovery operation and transferred the remains to a hospital in Sion for forensic identification.
DNA testing subsequently matched the remains to the two Belgian climbers who disappeared in 1992 in the vicinity of the Weissmies mountain, a towering summit peaking at over 4,000 meters in the Saas Valley. Regional officials maintain a comprehensive database of missing people dating back to 1925, with the vast majority vanishing in the rugged expanse of the mountains or turbulent alpine rivers.
Accelerating Ice Loss Across Switzerland
The emergence of these long-lost mountaineers is far from an isolated incident. Police noted that melting glaciers have repeatedly exposed the remains of individuals who vanished decades prior. In 2023, human remains discovered on a glacier near the Matterhorn were confirmed to belong to a German climber missing since 1986.
Scientists attribute these recurring discoveries to a dramatic acceleration in glacier shrinkage. Data from Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (Glamos) indicates that Switzerland’s glaciers shrunk by a quarter in the decade leading up to 2025. Following record-shattering ice loss years in 2022 and 2023, Glamos reported an additional 3% glacier reduction across 2025.
Furthermore, monitoring by the European Commission’s Copernicus service shows that the rate of global glacier retreat has climbed steadily since the 1990s, with particularly pronounced impacts across the Swiss Alps. Unseasonably warm weather at higher altitudes and diminished winter snowpacks continue to threaten not only historical recovery efforts but also the operational viability of regional ski resorts and winter sports competitions.
