The 40-year-old was bathing on Wednesday off the beach of El Haouaria, on the Cap Bon peninsula (northeast of Tunisia), when the current changed and swept away the bather. Civil protection was able to extract her from the water, but the Belgian, married to a Tunisian national, died in hospital.
An investigation into the exact circumstances of the drowning has been opened.
