Faced with the situation on the ground, Shadi Saleh, a 41-year-old Belgian-Palestinian, had no other choice but to leave the Gaza Strip. Thanks to his Belgian passport, he is now safe in Louvain where he was reunited with his wife and children. But to do this, he had to leave behind his Palestinian family, for whom he continues to worry. We were able to meet him. Here is his story.

I lived in Belgium in the past but returned to Palestine with the rest of my family, consisting of my mother, my brothers and sisters, and their children“, commence Shadi Saleh.”My wife and children were still living in Belgium in Louvain and I was waiting for them to join me in Palestine, since I was project manager in Gaza for Enabel (the development agency of the Belgian federal government, Editor’s note)”.

Living in Gaza, Shadi Saleh and his family were used to the sound of bombs: “This was not the first time that there had been an increase in bombings. I already saw some in 2014. In 2021, I was in Belgium but there were also some in 2012, in 2018… It’s repetitive“. But recently the war has accelerated sharply: “The first events took place on Saturday November 11. Suddenly we heard bombing everywhere… There were a lot of things happening“, he explains.
