The Belgian presidency comes in difficult times for the European Union. After the pandemic, the energy crisis and the rise in inflation, the 27 are faced with the war in Ukraine and the war between Israel and Hamas. “We find ourselves in a situation where we know we have a responsibility to assume“, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo immediately emphasized to an audience of European journalists on December 8.

To meet expectations, Belgium has set three priorities. With, firstly, the protection of European citizens. “Protecting our citizens means ensuring the security and well-being of all European citizens, begins by detailing Alexander De Croo. This means protecting our borders, strengthening our social and health agenda, preserving the unity of Europe by protecting and supporting Ukraine“.

Strengthening the European economy is the second priority on the Belgian presidency’s agenda. “We urgently need to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness on the global stage and, at the same time, deliver a just green and digital transition.

Finally, the third priority will be to reform the European Union to prepare it for the challenges of tomorrow. “The exercise we must undertake is as follows:explains the Flemish liberal: Are the EU, its current institutions and its functioning adapted to this future? We will have to reform the Union, its policies, its budgets, its institutions with a view to possible enlargement“.

To achieve these priorities, Belgium wants to work in the short and long term.
