Like Flemish Energy Minister Zuhal Demir and French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is also in favor of a “pause” in terms of European climate legislation, he said on Tuesday evening in the program Regarding the VRT.

At some point, you have to make a choice. Is it time to do it all at once?“, asks the Prime Minister. For Alexander De Croo, it is advisable not to “overload“legislation by tightening standards for nitrogen, nature restoration and biodiversity, in addition to targets for CO2 emissions.

According to the Prime, this would have two harmful consequences. First, the industry could no longer keep up, and the CO2 reduction targets will not be achieved, predicts Alexander De Croo. Moreover, the current momentum in favor of the climate could be lost, says the head of government. “That’s why I ask that we press ‘pause’. Let’s not go overboard with things that, strictly speaking, have nothing to do with global warming. These other subjects are also important, but they must be more phased in time“, recommended Alexander De Croo.

After the reactions that his position aroused within certain majority parties, as can be read below, the Prime Minister clarified his thoughts at the microphone of RTBF. He recalls that “the Belgian position” on European issues is established within the DGE, the Directorate General Coordination and European Affairs, a place where representatives of the various Belgian governments tune their violins. According to Alexander De Croo, “months ago already, in this body, the governments together decided that Belgium would ask for significant modifications in relation to this law on the restoration of nature“. He estimates to have “expressed a decision that had already been taken with all the Belgian governments” and said he was surprised at the reactions of the opposition.

In relation to this European legislation in preparation within the framework of the European Green Deal and which is concerned with the restoration of the environment, Alexander De Croo says that he is “not against this law” car “it’s something important“, but he asks”not to do everything at the same time” and of “do not overload the boat“.
