Beaten 3-2 by Cameroon, Gambia finished last in their group without a single point after three defeats in as many matches.

Hand of God, tour of the stadium and comeback: the totally crazy end of the Gambia – Cameroon match which eliminates Tom Saintfiet’s team

Tom Saintfiet had been stationed in Gambia since 2018. In 2021, he managed to qualify the West African nation for the final phase of the African Cup for the first time in its history. The Gambia then reached the quarter-finals, already eliminated by Cameroon.

I worked five and a half years with this team, we qualified twice for the African Cup, for a team that had never qualified, it is time for another dynamic for The Gambia and for me to another project“, concluded Saintfiet, who said to himself “very proud of (his) team“.

In the 2024 edition, Gambia was in a difficult group with Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea. Saintfiet’s men were soundly beaten by the Senegalese title holder (3-0), before conceding a closer defeat against Guinea (1-0). During the last day Tuesday, the Scorpions were cruelly defeated by Cameroon, conceding a goal in added time (2-3).

Saintfiet already has a wealth of experience leading national teams, having coached Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Yemen, Malawi, Togo, Bangladesh, Trinidad and Tobago and Malta.
