Belgium – A stork devoured by a lioness because of the storm

Storm Eunice hit Belgium and killed a rare bird, which ended up in lion territory at a zoo. A lioness killed and devoured him.

Following a gust of wind, a tree was uprooted and crashed into an aviary at the Pairi Daiza zoo in Brugelette (Hainaut). The fall damaged the enclosure, allowing a black-billed stork to escape on Saturday morning. But the bird ended up in the territory of the lions and a lioness captured it before eating it, says “Het Laatste Nieuws”.

“The hunting instinct of these predators resurfaced, they killed and ate the stork,” commented spokesman Sven Watthy. Footage from the scene was shared on Facebook. “The lioness Kira has offered a little extra”, can we read there.

The black-billed stork, also called oriental stork, is an endangered species.
