Belgium Threat Level: Government Response, Security Measures & Updates

2023-11-22 16:53:00

The threat level in Belgium remains at 3, i.e. a serious and probable threat, indicated Wednesday the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, and the Ministers of Justice and the Interior, Paul Van Tigchelt and Annelies Verlinden, at the following a meeting of the National Security Council.

This decision taken by the Coordination Body for Threat Analysis (OCAM) is justified, among other things, by the situation in the Middle East which may have an influence in Belgium even if developments are observed with the announcement of a pause humanitarian in the Gaza Strip.

It is also explained by the aftermath of the investigation into the attack of October 16 which cost the lives of two Swedish supporters. The authorities still fear the temptation of an “imitator”. The investigation is underway to determine the origin of the weapon used by the terrorist but also its links in the virtual world, particularly in foreign countries where arrests have already taken place.

The Jewish community continues to be the subject of particular vigilance. Reports of anti-Semitic words or actions are on the rise. People who are victims are invited to report any act of which they are victims. Each declaration will be taken seriously and will receive legal action if necessary, assured Mr. Van Tigchelt. The police are also invited to demonstrate increased vigilance and presence in front of certain places such as schools, particularly in Brussels and Antwerp.

Demonstrations remain authorized but ministers have been clear: calls for hatred or violence, or the expression of support for a terrorist organization will not be tolerated and will be the subject of a report.

Finally, as the end-of-year holidays approach, events such as Christmas markets will multiply. Local police are invited to carry out risk analyzes with OCAM. Special security measures may be taken: police presence, installation of cameras or even street closures.
