Belgium Weather: Summer 2023 Forecast and Fall Outlook

2023-08-14 15:46:00

The sun is definitely back in Belgium, and it shouldn’t be leaving any time soon. With Pascal Mormal, we take stock of the temperatures and the sun this week, the one after and even the fall which is coming.

After several weeks of showers, is the sun back for good?

Since last Thursday, we already have really pleasant conditions, without too many showers. Last Thursday and Friday, we even exceeded 25°C. The good news is that we should keep this relatively summery but not excessively hot weather for a while. Temperatures should hover around 24°C with, from time to time, a small risk of thunderstorms. A fairly limited risk.

Weather: the return of summer weather this week, summer 2023 among the hottest recorded in Belgium despite everything

For Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we expect a further rise in temperatures. Different models announce about thirty degrees in Belgium, including in the center of the country. However, the risk of thunderstorms will increase along with the temperatures.

Early next week, some models are looking at very high temperatures. Others announce a return to reasonable temperatures from Tuesday, that is to say around 23 or 25 ° C. We would still remain within the normal range for the season, since the highs are around 22-23°C in mid-August. For the next ten days, we should stay in normal or above.

Should we expect a new heat?

The risk is quite limited, but it is possible. The definition of “heat wave” is quite precise. It takes at least five consecutive days with 25°C at the Uccle weather station, and at least three days with thirty degrees or more during this sequence.

The five days with 25°C, it is possible. These are temperatures that can be reached at the end of this week and the beginning of the next. It remains to be seen if there are three days with at least 30°C during this sequence. There will be a “peak” of heat, and a heat wave cannot be ruled out. There’s maybe a 25-30% chance of getting one. This weekend, in any case, the temperatures will be well above the average for the season.

A “thermal anomaly” is announced for the next few days. What does this mean exactly?

We will probably have a fairly large thermal anomaly this weekend. However, it will not be exceptional. A thermal anomaly is precisely a deviation from a normal that is quite high. If we consider that the normal temperature in mid-August is 23°C and that the thermometer reads 30, the thermal anomaly is 7°C.

It’s still a nice anomaly happening, especially since we started the month of August with very cool temperatures.

Can you already draw the weather report for this summer?

In meteorology, the summer report begins on June 1 and ends on August 31. This one will probably be in the Top 5, at worst in the Top 7, of the hottest summers in Belgium since 1833. A summer – we have to wait for the latest data – which is also sunnier and wetter than average.

Weather: here is what awaits us in Belgium for the rest of the summer, but also the fall

Despite the rather negative feeling caused by the rains and relative coolness between July 20 and August 6, we still had a very hot summer. I know most people think mostly of July and August when we talk about summer, but we also count June in our data. An absolutely historic month, with broken records.

In the longer term, how does the post-season look?

We speak of “forecasts”, if we announce the weather a week to ten days in advance. But there are indeed also “seasonal trends”, which must always be approached with great caution.

In September, we will probably have a drier month than normal with temperatures that will be in excess. Without certainty, we can envisage a good late season. For October and November, signals indicate the return of mild and rainy weather. The second part of autumn is likely to be less pleasant, but the rains will be necessary to recharge the water tables.
