In total, 173 companies were fined, for a cumulative amount of 1.38 million euros, because they had too many long-term sick workers, according to a response from Minister of Social Affairs Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) to a parliamentary question. Belgium currently has half a million long-term sick people and some studies see this number reaching 600,000 by 2035. The federal government therefore developed a “return to work” plan in 2022 which aims to bring back to employment a part of long-term patients.

Among several measures, some aim to make businesses more responsible. Those which have an excessive number of long-term sick people can be sanctioned, in this case by a specific employer contribution of 2.5% on an annual basis.

It now appears that 173 companies have been subject to such a sanction, for a cumulative amount of 1.38 million euros, which is transferred to funds dedicated to prevention. In addition, 290 employers were issued a warning.
