Belinda Bencic (WTA 12) experienced terrible disappointment in the first round of Roland-Garros. The Saint-Galloise conceded a mortifying defeat 3-6 6-2 6-4 against the Russian Elina Avanesyan (WTA 134), who won her first Grand Slam victory.
Facing an opponent drafted as the “lucky loser” of the qualifications, Bencic was initially unable to deploy her game. Out of service and committing too many unforced errors, she thus began by conceding the first 3 games of the match .
While things seemed to be back in place for the Saint-Galloise from the start of the next set, won comfortably, the situation deteriorated again at the time of conclusion. Bencic had indeed managed the break in the 6th game of the decisive round and seemed able to ensure its success. But Avanesyan proved to be the most relaxed, scoring 2 consecutive breaks to earn her first prestigious success at this level.
