Beneath My Feet – In Parts, Together

(c) Beneath My Feet

Although they have presented a few songs here and there in recent years, the first and so far only album by Beneath My Feet actually almost nine years old. Since then, the Swedish quintet has been consistently working on their own sound, which can be located somewhere in the (modern) metal core environment, accompanied by numerous tours with metal celebrities. „In Parts, Together“ marks their powerful full-length comeback, which is a must for fans of contemporary core sounds between US power, British hardcore intensity and Nordic melodies.

Ten songs and three bonus tracks hit the ground running from the first second. The opening “Caught In A Hurricane” is what is commonly referred to as a smashing hum. After a brief intro, the thing explodes with angry, jagged core attacks reminiscent of early Architects in the best sense of the word. Of course, the big, catchy resolution with clear vocals should not be missing. The refrain catches your ear and puts you in a good mood. In the subsequent “Dig My Grave” the northern lights hit the shit, whereby the synthetically touched moments in the verses, which cleverly collide with djent-like walls, are particularly entertaining. Oppressive brute force, shout passages and Swedish melodic death undertones complete the thing.

Pretty much every digression lands at least one minor hit. The way the sublime, almost anthemic vocals peel out of the gruff undergrowth of “Sink To The Bottom Or Swim For The Shore” puts an already okay track beyond reproach—a simple but damn effective trick. For “Departure” Beneath My Feet attempt a slight reversal of the formula and bring comparatively calm, ballad-like approaches to the fore. The screams seem almost infernal due to the reduced presentation, go through marrow and leg. “Lost Sailors Grave” closes the bonus part and is another essential breakwater because of its spitefulness.

Of course, large parts of this record take place in classic, extremely familiar Metalcore realms, but that shouldn’t bother you in the slightest. Beneath My Feet put their stamp on familiar sounds, especially through the rough, unpolished UK hardcore influences that play with expectations. “In Parts, Together” is crushing in the best sense of the word, offers enough anthem-like passages, but also grueling mosh action that there is no getting around, as well as smaller experiments with a high entertainment value. The comeback on album length succeeds.
